Using Everything in Your Closet

It can be difficult to use all the pieces in your wardrobe, no matter how small your personal collection may be.

Let’s be honest, we all have things hidden in our closet. That dress that looked so good on the Internet, yet wasn’t quite what you expected; a top that was a gift but now just takes up space; something that seemed magical in the store but at home seems impossible to make it look right. Well it’s time to conquer these problems and ensure nothing remains a space waster! This lovely turn of fall offers a perfect opportunity to adjust your thoughts about any and every piece in your closet. Layering is a wonderful technique to change the look of a garment. A short skirt doesn’t seem as offensive with tights under it and a sheer dress can be made work-appropriate by covering up with layers. In fashion, the rule of proportions is one best learned early. Balance is a key to a flattering and stylish outfit. Your boyfriend’s baggy tee you love so much can be cute with a simple mini skirt. A strapless dress can seem less revealing with layered necklaces that distract from any inappropriate cleavage. Simply think of your top and bottom as two pieces that must reach equilibrium regarding silhouette and skin exposure.

Another issue surrounding these long-forgotten pieces is realizing that the item is not your style or completely “out of the box”. Whether it was a gift or just a misguided purchase we all somehow end up with something outside our bread and butter fashion. This is a great way to challenge yourself. It’s great to have a reliable style but changing it up every once in a while can be an adventure!

Re-vamping an outfit or item in your closet can be done as easily as adding a few great accessories. Our friend Iris Apfel knows how to use the power of accessorizing. Jewelry, tights, shoes, belts and purses are amazing and often inexpensive ways to evolve any ensemble. Add black colorful tights to make a simple black outfit pop, layer bangles or switch out the shoes—all easy ways to give your wardrobe a boost!

Focus on the offenders. Go through your closet and see what has been pushed to the back due to months of disregard. Decide what has been holding you back. Nothing quite matches that multi-colored skirt? Stow it in your bag and shop specifically for a suitable partner. The end result will surprise and delight you!
